If you’re trying to figure out the best time for family photos in Santa Clarita, CA, it really comes down to the look you love, your family’s schedule, and the experience you want. One of the things I love about photographing families here is that every season gives us something a little different.

As a Santa Clarita family photographer, I help my clients consider the scenery, temperatures, sunset time, their children’s ages, and even what they want to wear before choosing a date. There isn’t one perfect month for everyone, but there may be a perfect season for your family.

Is There a Best Time for Family Photos in Santa Clarita?

Not exactly.

Some families love soft green scenery. Others want warm golden fields. Some are planning ahead for holiday cards, while others simply want to update their photos without adding one more thing to an already busy fall schedule.

The season that gives you the look you love while still working for your family is usually the right answer.

Spring Family Photos and Wildflowers in Santa Clarita

Spring is one of my favorite times for family photos, especially if you love fresh greenery, softer colors, and the possibility of wildflowers.

Depending on the year and how much rainfall we receive, some locations around Santa Clarita may have beautiful spring blooms. I get asked about wildflower sessions every year, and while they can be absolutely gorgeous, wildflowers are never guaranteed.

Their timing and abundance can change from year to year, and sometimes the best blooms only last for a short window. If wildflowers are high on your wish list, spring is definitely the season to watch, but I always recommend being flexible with both timing and location.

Even without flowers, spring can give us lovely green hills and softer seasonal color. Light neutrals, pastels, soft blues, and subtle florals all photograph beautifully this time of year.

For this spring session, mom wore a floral dress from DOEN, and baby wore an outfit from Rylee + Cru, one of my favorite brands for baby and children’s clothing.

Summer Family Photos in Santa Clarita

Summer gives us longer evenings and that warm, golden California landscape.

It can also work really well for families with school aged kids because schedules may be a little more relaxed.

The biggest consideration is the heat. I prefer photographing later in the evening when temperatures begin to cool and the light becomes softer.

Summer Sessions With Young Children

Because sunset is later in summer, session times can be harder for babies and toddlers with early bedtimes.

If your little one falls apart by 7pm every night, we want to take that into consideration. Beautiful light is great, but a happy kid wins every time.

Fall Family Photos in Santa Clarita

Fall is easily the most popular season for family photos.

The golden landscapes, comfortable evenings, and warm wardrobe colors photograph beautifully. It is also the time when many families start thinking about holiday cards.

The catch? Fall calendars fill quickly.

If you already know you want a fall session, I recommend booking earlier rather than waiting until October or November.

When to Take Family Photos for Holiday Cards

If holiday cards are part of the plan, give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.

You want time for your session, gallery delivery, choosing your favorite image, ordering cards, addressing them, and somehow locating the stamps you definitely bought last year.

September and October are usually much easier than trying to squeeze everything into late November.

Winter Family Photos in Santa Clarita

Winter is often overlooked, but it can be a really beautiful option.

Cooler temperatures make outdoor sessions more comfortable, and the neutral scenery works beautifully with cream, camel, soft blue, beige, and muted tones.

Winter can also feel much calmer after the fall photography rush.

Consider Your Kids’ Ages and Bedtimes

Season matters, but your children’s routine matters just as much.

Session times shift throughout the year because sunset changes. A summer session may happen considerably later than one in fall or winter.

For families with babies and toddlers, I always recommend thinking about naps, dinner, and bedtime before choosing a season.

We want gorgeous light, yes. We also want your three year old reasonably pleased with all of us.

Choose the Season You Actually Love

You do not have to schedule family photos in fall just because everyone else does.

Dreaming of green hills and wildflowers? Spring may be your season.

Love those golden California evenings? Summer can be beautiful.

For holiday cards and warm neutral tones, fall makes a lot of sense.

And if you prefer something quieter and more relaxed, winter may be exactly right.

Choosing the Best Time for Family Photos in Santa Clarita

Ultimately, the best time for family photos in Santa Clarita is when the season, your schedule, and your family’s needs all come together.

The landscape and light will influence how your gallery looks, but the people in those photos matter so much more than the month on the calendar.

You do not need a major milestone or a perfectly planned season to update your photos. Sometimes realizing your kids have somehow gotten taller again is reason enough.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT tatiana

Motherhood completely changed the way I see photographs: they aren't just pretty to look at, but are some of my most treasured posessions.

I'm in this season of motherhood too. And as my boys have grown older, I've felt deeply how fleeting childhood truly is. If there's one thing I wish I had done differently, it's that I should have stepped in front of the camera more with my boys. The phone selfies are sweet of course, but I would give anything for more memories of us laughing, cuddling, playing, and just being together.
