If newborn photos in Santa Clarita are on your wish list, one of the first questions you may have is when you should actually schedule them. Between preparing for baby, getting the nursery ready, and keeping up with appointments, it is easy for photography to become one more thing on the list.
As a Santa Clarita newborn photographer, I recommend booking your session during pregnancy rather than waiting until after your baby arrives. That gives us time to plan ahead while still keeping the actual session date flexible around your baby’s arrival and how you are feeling afterward.
The good news is that newborn photography does not have to happen on one exact day. There is room to choose a time that works well for both you and your baby.

When Should You Book Newborn Photos in Santa Clarita?
Ideally, I recommend booking your newborn photographer during your second or early third trimester. You do not need to know exactly when your baby will arrive. Your due date simply gives us a place to start.
Once you are officially booked, I reserve space around your due date on my calendar. After baby arrives, we choose the actual session date based on how you and your little one are doing.
Booking ahead also means this is one less thing you have to think about during those first sleepy newborn days.

What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?
You may have heard that newborn photos have to happen within the first 7 to 10 days, but that is not necessarily true.
For the relaxed, lifestyle approach I use, there is more flexibility.
I typically photograph newborns during the first few weeks after birth, when babies are still tiny and sleepy but families have also had a little time to settle in.

Your Baby Does Not Have to Fit a Perfect Timeline
Babies arrive on their own schedules.
Some come early. Some decide they are perfectly comfortable where they are and make everyone wait.
Every birth and recovery is different, so there is no need to force your newborn session into one exact timeline. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist has helpful postpartum guidance for new moms, and your own recovery should always come first.
That flexibility is one of the reasons I recommend reserving newborn photos in Santa Clarita before your baby is born rather than trying to find a photographer at the last minute.

What If My Baby Is Already a Few Weeks Old?
Please do not assume you missed your chance.
Beautiful newborn photos can still be created with an older newborn. Your session may look a little different because your baby might be more awake, alert, and expressive, but those moments can be incredibly sweet too.
The goal is not to force your baby into a particular pose or timeline. It is to document this season exactly as it feels.
Tiny stretches, sleepy cuddles, curious eyes, and the way your baby settles into your arms are all worth remembering.

Why Booking During Pregnancy Makes Everything Easier
Planning your session before baby arrives gives you time to make decisions without feeling rushed.
We can talk about your preferred session style, wardrobe, and what you want your photos to feel like.
For my full session clients, I also offer a complimentary virtual styling service, so you can get help coordinating outfits for the entire family without staring at everyone’s closet wondering what on earth goes together.
And if older siblings will be included, we can plan around them too.
The more we can take care of beforehand, the less you have to think about once your baby is here.

What Should You Expect From a Newborn Session?
Newborn sessions should not feel rushed.
There is time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, cuddling, and whatever else your baby needs.
I focus on natural connection between your family rather than trying to make every moment perfectly posed. That might mean photographing your baby curled against your chest, Dad holding those impossibly tiny feet, or an older sibling getting close enough to inspect the newest member of the family.
Those are often the photographs parents end up loving most.

When Should You Reach Out to Your Newborn Photographer?
If you know you want newborn photos, I would not wait until the final weeks of pregnancy.
Reaching out during your second trimester gives you the best chance of securing availability and gives us plenty of time to plan without adding another last minute task to your list.
If you are already further along, though, still reach out. Sometimes I have availability, and it is always worth asking.

Planning Your Newborn Photos in Santa Clarita
There is already so much to think about when you are preparing for a new baby. Your photography experience should be one of the easy parts.
Booking newborn photos in Santa Clarita during pregnancy means your session is already taken care of before those newborn days begin. Once your baby arrives, we can choose the right date and focus on documenting all those little details that change way too quickly.
You do not need a perfectly sleeping baby, a perfectly organized home, or a perfectly planned first few weeks.
You just need your family and your newest little love.
