How to prepare for newborn photos in Santa Clarita is one of those things that can feel like one more item on your already very full new mom to do list. The good news is that you really do not need to do much. As a Santa Clarita newborn photographer and a mom myself, I know those first weeks with a baby can be a blur. Your newborn session should not add stress to them.

My goal is to help you plan everything ahead of time so that when session day arrives, you can simply be with your baby and your family. I will guide you through what to wear, what to do with baby, how to handle siblings, and all the little details along the way.

Preparing for Newborn Photos in Santa Clarita

There is no need to create a complicated schedule leading up to your newborn photos. Babies are unpredictable, especially during those first few weeks, and that is completely okay.

A few simple things can make the day easier, though. If you are wondering how to prepare for newborn photos in Santa Clarita, the best place to start is simply making sure everyone feels comfortable. There is no complicated routine you need to follow before I arrive.

Keep Baby Comfortable Before Newborn Photos

A well fed baby is usually a happier baby, so I recommend feeding your newborn shortly before we begin. That said, please do not stress if the timing does not work out perfectly.

If baby needs to eat again during the session, we stop. If there is a diaper change, we stop. And if baby needs a few minutes with mom or dad, we stop.

I build that flexibility into newborn sessions because your baby is the one setting the pace.

For an in home session, keeping the house slightly warmer than usual can also help your newborn stay comfortable, especially if we plan to photograph baby in a diaper, swaddle, or simple onesie.

Do Not Worry About Getting Baby to Sleep

This is something I really want new parents to know. Your baby does not have to sleep through the entire session.

Some babies sleep almost the whole time. Others are wide awake and curious. Most give us a little of both. We can create beautiful images either way.

I love photographing those tiny stretches, little expressions, open eyes, and moments when baby settles into mom or dad. Your newborn does not need to perform for the camera, and you do not need to spend the morning trying to make sure they are perfectly sleepy.

What to Wear For Newborn Photos

For newborn photos, I usually recommend soft neutrals and simple pieces that photograph well together without feeling overly coordinated. Cream, beige, soft white, muted earth tones, and subtle textures all work beautifully.

Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable wearing. After booking, I help my clients with wardrobe so you are not left trying to coordinate everyone on your own.

If you want more guidance, I put together a full post on what to wear for newborn photos with outfit ideas for mom, dad, siblings, and baby.

Keep Baby’s Outfit Simple Too

Your newborn does not need several elaborate outfits.

A simple onesie, neutral sleeper, swaddle, or even just a diaper with a soft blanket can photograph beautifully. I want the focus to stay on your baby rather than on clothing or props.

If you have something sentimental you would like to include, such as a special blanket or handmade item, absolutely have it nearby. We can decide during the session whether it fits naturally into the photos.

Preparing Your Home For Newborn Photos

One of the biggest misconceptions about in home newborn photography is that your entire house needs to be spotless.

It doesn’t. One of the things I tell parents who ask how to prepare for newborn photos in Santa Clarita is to focus only on the spaces we are actually going to use.

I am usually looking for good natural light and a few simple areas where your family can comfortably be together. That might be your bedroom, nursery, living room, or even just one beautiful window.

Before I arrive, you can clear nightstands or remove anything distracting from the areas we are most likely to use. Please do not feel like you need to deep clean your entire house with a newborn at home.

As a mom, that is the last thing I would tell another mom to worry about.

Preparing Older Siblings for Newborn Photos

If you have older children, I don’t expect them to sit still and smile at the camera for the entire session.

Actually, I don’t want them to.

Let them know someone is coming to take pictures of the family and their new baby, but try not to put too much pressure on them to behave a certain way.

We can let them snuggle baby, lie on the bed, talk, play, or take breaks when they need them. Sometimes giving siblings a little space is exactly what we need to get the most natural photographs.

Snacks are always a good idea too. Just choose something quick and not too messy.

You Do Not Need to Know How to Pose

Please do not practice poses before I arrive.

I will guide you.

I might ask you to move closer together, hold your baby a certain way, look down at them, or interact with your children. The direction is simple, and I am always watching for the little moments that happen naturally in between.

Those are often my favorites.

The goal isn’t to make your family look perfect. It is to photograph what this season actually feels like, just in a beautiful and intentional way.

What to Have Ready for Your Newborn Session

You really do not need to pack anything for an in home newborn session, which is one of the reasons I love them.

I recommend having diapers, wipes, burp cloths, feeding supplies, a pacifier if baby uses one, and any sentimental item you may want photographed within easy reach.

For yourself, have water nearby and eat something before the session. You just had a baby. Taking care of yourself matters too.

If your session is taking place in a studio rather than at home, I will help you prepare beforehand so you know exactly what to bring.

Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

When you prepare for newborn photos, one of the best things you can do is leave a little extra room in your schedule so no one feels rushed.

There may be feeding breaks. Someone may need a snack. Your toddler might decide they are completely finished with pictures for ten minutes.

That’s real life with a newborn and young kids.

We work around it.

My approach to newborn photography is relaxed because I want your gallery to feel like your family, not like everyone spent two hours trying to get one perfect photograph.

I recommend reaching out before your baby arrives whenever possible, but I also know babies and plans do not always follow a calendar. If your little one is already here, it is still worth reaching out to see what availability I have.

How to prepare for newborn photos in Santa Clarita really comes down to keeping things simple. Feed your baby, choose comfortable outfits, tidy only the spaces we are likely to photograph, and leave the rest to me.

You do not need a perfectly sleeping baby, a spotless home, or children who sit still on command. You just need your family as you are right now.

And that is exactly what I want to photograph.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT tatiana

Motherhood completely changed the way I see photographs: they aren't just pretty to look at, but are some of my most treasured posessions.

I'm in this season of motherhood too. And as my boys have grown older, I've felt deeply how fleeting childhood truly is. If there's one thing I wish I had done differently, it's that I should have stepped in front of the camera more with my boys. The phone selfies are sweet of course, but I would give anything for more memories of us laughing, cuddling, playing, and just being together.
