Figuring out what to wear for newborn photos in Santa Clarita can feel like one more decision during an already busy season. As a mom and Santa Clarita newborn photographer, I know the goal is usually simple: you want everyone to look beautiful without making the process stressful.
I usually recommend soft colors, comfortable fabrics, and simple pieces that keep the attention on your family and your new baby. The goal is to look coordinated without looking overly matched.

What Colors Should You Wear for Newborn Photos?
Soft, neutral colors work beautifully for newborn photography.
Cream, ivory, beige, soft gray, muted blush, light blue, and other gentle tones photograph well in bright, natural spaces. They also help keep your gallery feeling timeless.
Try to avoid very bold colors, large logos, or busy patterns that pull attention away from your baby.
You do not need everyone wearing the exact same shade. Instead, choose colors that complement each other.
Start With Mom’s Outfit
Start with Mom.
I usually recommend choosing your outfit first and then building everyone else’s clothing around it.
A soft dress, relaxed knit, or simple top with movement photographs beautifully. Comfort matters too. You just had a baby, so this is not the moment to wear something that makes you feel restricted or self conscious.
Flowy fabrics and soft textures tend to photograph especially well because they add movement without competing with your baby.
If you book a full session with me, I also offer complimentary virtual styling to help take some of the guesswork out of coordinating your family’s wardrobe.
For this session, mom wore a soft floral dress that photographed beautifully in their light and neutral home. I love dresses with movement, subtle prints, and softer colors for newborn photos. You can shop this dress here.

Where to Shop for Mom’s Newborn Photo Dress
If you are still looking for something to wear, a few of my favorite places to shop for newborn photo dresses are Baltic Born, Petal & Pup, Morning Lavender, and Nothing Fits But.
When shopping, look for soft neutrals, muted florals, gentle texture, and fabrics that move easily. Cream, soft blue, blush, beige, and subtle prints all work beautifully for newborn photos.
Most importantly, choose something you can comfortably sit, cuddle, and move around in while holding your baby.
Keep Dad’s Outfit Simple
Dad’s outfit should complement Mom without matching her exactly.
A simple button down, knit shirt, polo, or neutral sweater works well. Pair it with khaki, beige, gray, or another soft neutral.
I usually recommend avoiding very dark colors if the rest of the family is wearing light tones. Keeping everyone within a similar color palette creates a softer, more cohesive gallery.
Choose Comfortable Pieces for Siblings
For siblings, simple is usually best.
Soft dresses, rompers, sweaters, linen shirts, and neutral pants all photograph beautifully.
If you have young children, choose something they can comfortably move in. A toddler who feels comfortable is much more likely to relax and interact naturally during the session.

What Should Your Baby Wear for Newborn Photos?
Your newborn does not need a complicated outfit.
Simple onesies, soft sleepers, wraps, or neutral clothing keep the focus on your baby’s face and tiny details.
Comfort is the priority.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends choosing baby clothing that is comfortable and easy to put on and remove. You can read their tips for dressing your baby for additional newborn clothing guidance.
What to Avoid Wearing for Newborn Photos
A few things tend to photograph less beautifully during newborn sessions.
Try to avoid:
Large logos or graphics
Neon or very bright colors
Several competing patterns
Very stiff clothing
Anything that feels uncomfortable
You also do not need everyone in identical outfits. Coordinated always photographs more naturally than perfectly matched.
