If you are wondering when to take maternity photos, you are not alone. Most expecting moms want that beautifully rounded bump without waiting so long that the session feels uncomfortable.

For many maternity sessions, there is a sweet spot that gives you the best of both.

When Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?

For most moms, I recommend scheduling maternity photos around 28 to 36 weeks.

By then, your bump is usually well defined, but you may still feel comfortable enough to walk, move, and enjoy your session.

There is no perfect week for everyone, though. Every pregnancy is different, so your comfort matters just as much as the calendar.

Why Maternity Photo Timing Matters

It can be tempting to wait until your belly is as big as possible, but bigger does not always mean better for photos.

The goal is to capture this season while you still feel like yourself and can enjoy the experience.

Should You Schedule Maternity Photos Earlier for Twins?

If you are expecting twins or multiples, it may make sense to schedule your session earlier.

You may begin showing sooner and feel more comfortable earlier in pregnancy. Your doctor can also help you decide what timing makes the most sense for you.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?

Booking your photographer and taking your photos are two different things.

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester, especially if you want a specific month, location, or photographer. Booking early gives you more flexibility and helps you avoid scrambling during those final weeks.

What If Your Maternity Photo Timing Looks Different?

Some moms show earlier, while others prefer waiting a little longer.

Your maternity session should be planned around how you feel, how your pregnancy is progressing, and the look you want for your photos.

Choose the Best Time for Your Maternity Session

An outdoor session may include more walking and movement, while a studio session can feel slower and more relaxed.

The best timing is the one that helps you feel comfortable, confident, and able to enjoy the experience.

Once you know when to take maternity photos, the rest becomes much easier.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT tatiana

Motherhood completely changed the way I see photographs: they aren't just pretty to look at, but are some of my most treasured posessions.

I'm in this season of motherhood too. And as my boys have grown older, I've felt deeply how fleeting childhood truly is. If there's one thing I wish I had done differently, it's that I should have stepped in front of the camera more with my boys. The phone selfies are sweet of course, but I would give anything for more memories of us laughing, cuddling, playing, and just being together.
