Knowing how to prepare for your maternity photo session can make the entire experience feel so much easier. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose, what to bring, or whether every little detail is perfect.

As a Santa Clarita maternity photographer, I help my clients plan well before session day. From wardrobe to hair and makeup, the goal is for you to feel prepared, comfortable, and excited about your photos.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photo Session Early

You do not need to plan every detail months in advance, but giving yourself a little extra time makes everything easier.

Once your session is booked, start thinking about the overall look you want. Consider whether you prefer something soft and romantic, simple and modern, or a little more elevated.

My clients receive a maternity styling guide after booking to help with colors, clothing, accessories, and coordinating family members.

What to Wear When Preparing for Maternity Photos

Your outfit can make a big difference in how your maternity photos feel.

I usually recommend clothing that photographs softly and allows your bump to be the focus. Dresses with movement, flattering fitted pieces, and neutral or muted colors all photograph beautifully.

Styling Support for Your Maternity Photo Session

Styling support is available throughout the planning process. If you are deciding between dresses, coordinating your partner, or wondering whether something will photograph well, you can always send it my way.

Here are a few of my favorite maternity clothing stores:

Nothing Fits But – Nothing Fits But is one of my favorite places for romantic maternity dresses with soft texture and beautiful movement. The mom featured in this session is actually wearing a dress from Nothing Fits But, and it photographed beautifully outdoors.

If you love this look, you can shop the exact dress she wore here.

Worth Collective – Worth Collective is another beautiful option for soft neutrals, feminine silhouettes, and timeless pieces. I would look here for dresses that feel elevated but still relaxed.

Hair and Makeup Prep for Your Maternity Photo Session

Professional hair and makeup is completely optional, but many moms love having it done before their session.

It can help you feel a little more polished while still looking like yourself.

When you book, you will also receive a list of local hair and makeup artists I recommend. This makes it easier to find someone whose work photographs beautifully and fits the style of your session. Nicole Alexis is an amazing local MUA that I highly recommend!

Simple Beauty Prep for Maternity Photos

Fresh nails, moisturized skin, and hair that feels like you are usually all you need.

Avoid trying a completely new beauty look right before your session. You want to recognize yourself in these photos years from now.

What to Bring to Your Maternity Photography Session

Bring water, comfortable shoes if we will be walking, and anything you might need for quick touch ups. If your partner or children are joining, a few snacks for younger kids can also be helpful.

Most importantly, eat beforehand and give yourself plenty of time to arrive without rushing.

How to Prepare for Maternity Photos Without Worrying About Posing

This is probably the part you can worry about the least.

You do not need to practice poses or figure out what to do with your hands. I will guide you throughout the session while keeping everything natural and comfortable.

The goal is not perfection. It is to photograph you beautifully during a season that goes by much faster than it feels like it will.

Preparing for Your Maternity Photo Session in Santa Clarita

When you prepare for your maternity photo session ahead of time, the day itself can feel much more relaxed. Between my styling guide, local hair and makeup recommendations, and ongoing planning support, you will not be left figuring everything out on your own.

If you are looking for natural, timeless maternity photography in Santa Clarita, I would love to help you plan a session that feels comfortable, beautiful, and true to you.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT tatiana

Motherhood completely changed the way I see photographs: they aren't just pretty to look at, but are some of my most treasured posessions.

I'm in this season of motherhood too. And as my boys have grown older, I've felt deeply how fleeting childhood truly is. If there's one thing I wish I had done differently, it's that I should have stepped in front of the camera more with my boys. The phone selfies are sweet of course, but I would give anything for more memories of us laughing, cuddling, playing, and just being together.
