Figuring out what to wear for maternity photos can feel like one more thing on an already full pregnancy to do list. The good news is that your outfit does not need to be complicated.

I want my clients to feel like themselves in their photos. The goal is to choose something that flatters your bump, photographs beautifully, and still feels comfortable.

As a Santa Clarita maternity photographer, I also help with styling throughout the planning process. Once your session is booked, you will receive my styling guide, and you can send me outfit ideas anytime. If you want more help, I can also create a custom mood board and help coordinate the whole family.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos

If you are wondering what to wear for maternity photos, start with the outfit that makes you feel most comfortable and confident. There is no single outfit that works for every mom. Your session can feel romantic, casual, modern, or somewhere in between. The most important thing is that your clothing works with your location, your body, and the overall look you want.

Flowing Dresses for Maternity Photos

Long dresses are always beautiful because they add movement and photograph softly.

Look for fabrics that drape well and styles that define your shape near the waist or just above your bump. Cream, soft neutrals, muted colors, subtle florals, and earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully.

You also do not need a dress labeled maternity. Many regular dresses work perfectly if the cut gives your bump enough room.

Fitted Maternity Outfits Can Be Beautiful Too

A fitted dress or simple knit outfit highlights your shape in a completely different way.

These looks work especially well for studio maternity photos because the simplicity keeps the attention on you and your bump.

Casual Maternity Photos With Jeans and an Exposed Belly

Your maternity session does not have to feel formal.

One of my favorite looks is relaxed jeans with a simple bra, tank, cardigan, or button down that allows a little bit of your belly to show.

This works especially well in the studio and creates photos that feel effortless and intimate.

Coordinating Your Partner and Children

Everyone does not need to match.

Instead, create a cohesive color palette. Start with your outfit first, then build the rest of the family around it.

If you are wearing a soft floral dress, your partner might wear a neutral shirt and trousers while your children pull one or two subtle colors from your dress.

Avoid too many competing patterns or bold logos so the focus stays on your family.

Styling Help Is Included With Your Maternity Session

You do not have to figure this out alone.

My clients receive a styling guide after booking, and I am available throughout the planning process for outfit feedback.

You can send me screenshots, links, or photos from your closet. If you want more direction, I can also create a custom family mood board so you can see how everyone’s outfits work together before your session.

My Favorite Places to Shop for Maternity Photo Outfits

You definitely do not have to shop only from maternity brands. These are a few places I like depending on the look you want.

Nothing Fits But – Nothing Fits But is one of my favorite places for romantic maternity dresses with soft texture and beautiful movement. The mom featured in this session is actually wearing a dress from Nothing Fits But, and it photographed beautifully outdoors.

If you love this look, you can shop the exact dress she wore here.

Worth Collective – Worth Collective is another beautiful option for soft neutrals, feminine silhouettes, and timeless pieces. I would look here for dresses that feel elevated but still relaxed.

DÔEN – DÔEN is not specifically a maternity brand, but many of their romantic, vintage inspired dresses have flowing silhouettes that can work beautifully during pregnancy. Their current collections include dresses, occasion pieces, and soft feminine styles that fit well with a timeless maternity wardrobe.

It is also a great option if you want something you can continue wearing after pregnancy.

Free People – Free People can be great for relaxed dresses, soft knits, oversized layers, and casual pieces. I especially like it for a more effortless maternity look or that jeans, cardigan, and exposed belly combination.

Beachwood the Label – Beachwood The Label is a beautiful option if you love effortless, natural pieces with a soft Mediterranean feel. Their linen dresses have relaxed, flowing silhouettes that work especially well for maternity photos, and many of the styles can still be worn long after pregnancy.

Amazon for Last Minute Maternity Outfits – Sometimes the session sneaks up on you. Amazon can be a lifesaver for simple fitted dresses, neutral basics, bras, bodysuits, or backup outfit options.

Just give yourself enough time to try everything on first. Pregnancy sizing likes to keep us humble.

Shop Your Own Closet

Before buying anything, look at what you already own. A cardigan, oversized button down, favorite jeans, fitted tank, or simple dress might photograph perfectly.

Your outfit should still feel like you.

Choose Comfort Over the Perfect Outfit

Whatever you wear, make sure you can comfortably sit, walk, and move. If something is digging into your belly or constantly needs adjusting, you will notice it during your session.

When deciding what to wear for maternity photos, comfort should always be part of the decision. The best outfit is one that photographs beautifully but still lets you feel like yourself.

If you’re looking for natural, timeless maternity photography in Santa Clarita, I would love to help you plan your session from start to finish.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT tatiana

Motherhood completely changed the way I see photographs: they aren't just pretty to look at, but are some of my most treasured posessions.

I'm in this season of motherhood too. And as my boys have grown older, I've felt deeply how fleeting childhood truly is. If there's one thing I wish I had done differently, it's that I should have stepped in front of the camera more with my boys. The phone selfies are sweet of course, but I would give anything for more memories of us laughing, cuddling, playing, and just being together.
