If you are planning newborn photos with siblings, you might be wondering how your older kids will handle the session. Especially if you have a toddler, the idea of asking them to sit perfectly beside a newborn can feel a little ambitious.
The good news? They do not need to.
As a Santa Clarita newborn photographer, I approach sibling photos with plenty of flexibility. The goal is connection, not perfect behavior.
Newborn Photos With Siblings Should Feel Natural
Some of the sweetest sibling photos happen when we stop asking kids to pose.
Instead, I may invite an older sibling to cuddle next to the baby, gently touch their toes, give them a kiss, or simply look at their new little brother or sister.
These small prompts give kids something to do and usually create much more natural expressions.
How to Prepare Siblings for a Newborn Photography Session
A little preparation can make the experience easier, but I recommend keeping it very low pressure.
Tell your children that you are going to take some family photos and that they will get to cuddle and play with the baby. You do not need to spend days reminding them that they have to smile or behave.
Avoid Putting Too Much Pressure on Older Kids
Kids can tell when something feels like a big deal.
Instead of asking them to perform for the camera, let them interact with you and the baby naturally. I will guide them when needed, but we also give them plenty of room to be themselves.
Snacks, breaks, and a little silliness are completely welcome.
What If Your Toddler Does Not Want to Hold the Baby?
That is completely fine.
A toddler does not have to hold the newborn for us to create beautiful newborn sibling photos. They can sit beside the baby, cuddle with you, give the baby a quick kiss, or simply be included in a family moment.
Sometimes the less we push, the more willing kids become.
Let Sibling Photos Happen Early in the Session
Whenever possible, I like to photograph siblings and include some family photos earlier in the session.
Young children usually have the most energy and patience at the beginning. Once we have those important family images, they can take a break while we focus on the baby and parent portraits.
Every Sibling Relationship Looks Different
Some older siblings are instantly fascinated by the new baby. Others need a little more space.
Both are normal, and your gallery does not need to look like anyone else’s.
