If you are planning family pictures with a little one, these tips for family photos with toddlers can help your Santa Clarita session feel much easier. Will they sit still? Will they smile? What if they want nothing to do with the camera?
The good news is that toddlers do not need to behave perfectly for beautiful family photos. They bring so much personality, movement, and fun to a session. The best photos usually happen when we stop expecting perfection and let them be exactly who they are.
As a mom and a Santa Clarita family photographer, I know how quickly little moods can change. My approach is relaxed, flexible, and centered around keeping your toddler comfortable while creating beautiful photos of your family together.

Choose the Best Time for Family Photos With Toddlers
One of the most important tips for family photos with toddlers is to think about your child’s normal routine.
A beautiful location and perfect outfits will not matter much if your toddler is exhausted.
Whenever possible, choose a session time that works around naps, meals, and bedtime. Every toddler is different, so what works perfectly for one family may not work for another.
Outdoor sessions are often scheduled around the best natural light, but there is usually some flexibility depending on the season. If you are worried about timing, tell me about your toddler’s schedule before your session. We can decide what will work best together.
Do Not Practice Smiling Before Your Family Photos
You do not need to spend the week before your session teaching your toddler to smile for the camera.
In fact, I would rather you did not.
Toddlers can quickly pick up on pressure. If everyone is repeatedly asking them to smile, look at the camera, or say cheese, the session can start feeling like work.
Instead, talk about your photo session like something fun you are going to do together.
You can tell them you are going somewhere to play, explore, cuddle, or hang out as a family. Keeping expectations simple makes the experience feel much easier.

Let Your Toddler Move During Family Photos
Toddlers are not designed to sit perfectly still, and your family photos do not require them to.
During a session, we might walk together, play a little game, snuggle, explore the location, or let your toddler run back and forth between you. Movement often creates some of the sweetest images.
Instead of asking a toddler to stay in one position for several minutes, I work with their attention span. We may get a few quick photos in one spot and then move on. That flexibility helps us create natural expressions without forcing them.
One of the best tips for family photos with toddlers is to let them move instead of expecting them to stay perfectly still.

Give Them Time to Warm Up
Some toddlers are ready to play with me the second we meet.
Others need a little time.
Both are completely normal.
I never expect a young child to immediately feel comfortable with a new person holding a camera. Sometimes we start with easy family photos while they stay close to Mom or Dad. Other times, we let them explore while I photograph from a little farther away.
Giving toddlers space to warm up usually works much better than trying to convince them to participate right away.
Snacks Can Save the Day, But Timing Matters
Snacks can be helpful during a family session, especially with toddlers, but I recommend keeping them tucked away at first.
Once a toddler knows treats are available, they can quickly become the only thing they want. Instead, save snacks for when your child really needs a little reset.
My favorites are tiny, quick options like mini marshmallows, small fruit gummies, or a few pieces of dry cereal. I would avoid larger snacks like cookies or granola bars because they take longer to eat and can get messy fast.
Think quick reset, not full snack break.
Bring Something Your Toddler Loves
If your child has a favorite simple activity or toy, feel free to bring it along. Things like bubbles, paper airplanes, a pinwheel, or another small activity can give toddlers something fun to focus on during the session.
These little prompts can create some of the most natural family photos because your child is busy playing instead of thinking about the camera.
I can also incorporate those activities into the session in a way that still feels intentional and beautiful, so the photos stay true to your family without feeling overly posed.

Avoid Putting Pressure on Your Toddler
This may be the biggest one. If your toddler does not want to smile, that is okay. They want to be held, that is okay too.
And if they need a minute with Mom, want to run, or suddenly decide rocks are the most interesting thing they have ever seen, we can work with that.
Parents often feel like they need to help me get their child to cooperate. You really do not.
I will guide you throughout the session and let you know what I need from you. Most of the time, your job is simply to stay close, interact with your child, and enjoy being together.
The less pressure your toddler feels, the more likely we are to get those genuine expressions everyone loves.
Focus on Connection Instead of Perfect Poses
Some of my favorite family images happen when no one is looking directly at the camera.
Your toddler might be laughing in Dad’s arms, holding your hand while walking, climbing into your lap, or giving you a very enthusiastic hug.
Those moments tell so much more of your family’s story than a perfectly posed photograph ever could.
We will absolutely try for a few classic everyone looking photos. But I never want that to be the only goal of your session.

What if My Toddler Has a Meltdown During Family Photos?
It happens. A toddler meltdown does not mean your family session is ruined.
Sometimes they need a snack, a cuddle, a quick break, or simply a change of scenery. I expect sessions with little kids to have pauses. We do not need to rush through them.
I would much rather give your toddler a few minutes to reset than keep pushing and make everyone more stressed.
This is also why I build flexibility into my family sessions. Kids are unpredictable, and your session should leave room for that.
What Should Parents Do During the Session?
Your toddler will look to you throughout the session.
If you seem stressed about whether they are behaving correctly, they often feel that too.
Try to stay relaxed and let me handle the photographing.
Cuddle them. Play with them. Laugh with your spouse. Follow their lead when I ask you to.
You do not have to constantly tell your child where to stand or where to look.
Some of the most beautiful photos happen when parents stop worrying about the camera and simply focus on their kids.
Why Family Photos With Toddlers Can Be So Special
Toddlers bring energy and unpredictability to a family session, but that is also what makes this age so fun to photograph.
Their personalities are huge. Their expressions change in seconds. They love fiercely, laugh loudly, and usually have absolutely no interest in pretending for the camera.
That is exactly why these photos can feel so special.
The best tips for family photos with toddlers really come down to keeping expectations realistic, allowing movement, and trusting the process.
You do not need a perfectly cooperative toddler to have beautiful family photos.
You just need your family.
If you are ready for relaxed, playful family photos in Santa Clarita, I would love to photograph this season for you.
